Templates are distributed to users allowing them to enter data that will be imported into Salesforce. Each template works with the File Import Component, which references a mapping.
A mapping defines how columns in the template correspond to Salesforce objects and fields, ensuring data is imported to the correct destination. In other words, mappings tell Salesforce where each piece of information belongs.
This section guides you through preparing a template that forms the foundation for creating a mapping.
Step 1: Understand the Data You Need to Import
Before creating a template file, identify the following:
- The Salesforce object(s) you are importing data into (e.g., Contact, Account, Custom Objects).
- The fields within the object that will receive the data (e.g., Name, Email, Custom Fields).
Step 2: Create a Template File
- Open a spreadsheet tool (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets).
- In Row 1 of the spreadsheet, add header values that corresponds to fields in your Salesforce org.
- For example, if the template is for Contacts, enter First Name in A1, enter Last Name in A2, and so on…
Note: The values used in these headers do not need to be an identical match to Salesforce field names. This gives you the flexibility to name them something more meaningful for the audience that the file will be distributed to. You will not be able to change the header values without impacting the existing deployment once the mapping has been activated and deployed, so ensure that you choose names carefully. If you need to change a header value in the future, you will need to update and redeploy the mapping, or create a new one.
Step 3: Populate Sample Data
- Add at least one row of sample data under the header row. This is required for the file to be valid for use at a later stage.
- Ensure the sample data aligns with the data types of the Salesforce fields (e.g., dates are in the correct format, picklist values match existing options).
Step 4: Save the File
- Save the file in a supported format: XLS, XLSX, XLSM, ODS, or CSV.
- Use a descriptive name for the file, such as “Contact Import Template” or “Account Import Template.”

Uploading a Template
Step 1: Navigate to the Impowr Tab
- Go to App Launcher and type Impowr.
- Under Apps, select Impowr.
Note: If you do not see Impowr, ensure your administrator has provided you with a license for the product and given your user the Impowr Admin User permission set. If you continue to face issues, speak with your system administrator.

Step 2: Upload Your File
- Select the Impowr tab.
- Use the upload tile to either click and open a file explorer, or drag and drop your prepared template into the designated upload area. Ensure the file is in a supported format (XLS, XLSX, XLSM, ODS, or CSV).

The uploaded file will now be represented as a tile in the tab, follow through the next guides to create a mapping from this template.
